As a teacher in Ho Chi Minh City, I know firsthand how frustrating it can be when the rainy season hits. The streets flood, traffic becomes a nightmare, and it seems like there's nothing to do but stay indoors. Don't let the rain dampen your fun!

There are plenty of things to do in Ho Chi Minh City, even when it's raining. Let's explore some of my favourite indoor activities when the heavens open up.

Rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City

The rainy season in Ho Chi Minh City lasts from May to November, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in August and September. The city can experience flooding during this time, especially in low-lying areas.

This can make it challenging to get around, as many streets become impassable due to the water levels. But don't let that discourage you from enjoying the city.

With some planning, you can still have a great time in Ho Chi Minh City, even when it's raining.

Why you should still have fun during the rainy season

You might be tempted to stay indoors during the rainy season, but you did that yesterday. There are many reasons to get out and explore the city, even when it's raining.

The rain can cool things down a bit, making it more comfortable to be outside. Plus, many of the city's attractions are indoors, so you don't have to worry about getting wet.

And let's face it; sometimes it's nice to just relax with a good book or cup of coffee while listening to the rain.

Top indoor activities to do when it’s raining

It's best to head indoors when the rain is coming down hard. Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of indoor activities to entertain you. One of my favourites is to go to the movies. There are lots of cinemas all around the city showing the latest flicks. And with tickets starting from as little as $3.50, it won't break the bank.

Another great indoor activity is the Artinus 3D Art Museum, where you can take photos with 3D art installations. If you're looking for a little bit of culture, check out the Opera House, which hosts a variety of performances throughout the year. Theatre? We got you, check out the Dragonfly Theatre Company and grab a ticket for their next performance.

Best cafes and restaurants to visit on a rainy day

When it's raining outside, there's nothing better than curling up with a good book and a hot drink. Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of cosy cafes to choose from. One of my favourites is L'usine, which has multiple locations throughout the city. They serve great coffee, delicious food, and have a relaxed atmosphere.

You can also check out The Workshop Coffee, which has a more modern vibe and serves some of the best coffee in the city. And if you're looking for a place to grab a bite to eat, head to Propaganda, which serves up delicious Vietnamese cuisine in a funky setting.

Museums and galleries to explore during the rainy season

If you're looking for a little bit of culture, Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of museums and galleries. The War Remnants Museum tells the story of the Vietnam War from a Vietnamese perspective. It's a sobering but essential museum to visit.

Another great option is Rehahn's Gallery, showcasing photography that dives deep into the people and culture of Vietnam. And if you're looking for contemporary art, check out the Galerie Quynh, which presents some of the best contemporary artists from Vietnam and beyond.

Shopping malls and markets to check out when it's raining

If you're looking to shop, Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of options, even when it's pouring. One of the best shopping malls in the city is Vincom Center, which has a variety of shops and restaurants.

Another great shopping mall is Takashimaya, a Japanese department store with everything from fashion to home goods. And if you're looking for a more traditional shopping experience, head to Ben Thanh Market, one of the city's oldest and most famous markets.

Spa and wellness centres to pamper yourself on a rainy day

Sometimes, the best thing to do on a rainy day is to pamper yourself. Ho Chi Minh City has plenty of spa and wellness centres. One of my favourites is Ayla Spa Royal Saigon, which offers a variety of treatments, including massages and facials.

Saigon Heritage Spa has a relaxing atmosphere and uses natural products. And if you're looking for some exercise and meditation, check out at Ha's Yoga Studio, which offers a variety of yoga classes and workshops.

Famous tourist attractions that can still be enjoyed in the rain

Just because it's raining doesn't mean you can't enjoy some of Ho Chi Minh City's most popular tourist attractions. One of the best things to do on a rainy day is to visit the Reunification Palace, the home of the South Vietnamese president during the Vietnam War. It's a fascinating look at the country's history and politics.

And if you're looking for something a little bit different, check out the Jade Emperor Pagoda, a Taoist temple full of colourful statues and intricate carvings.

Tips for staying safe and dry during the rainy season

If you're going to be out and about during the rainy season, it's important to stay safe and dry. Ensure you have a good raincoat or umbrella, and wear shoes that can handle the water.

Be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking through flooded areas. And if you're driving, be extra cautious, as the streets can become slippery and visibility can be reduced.

When the rain falls . . .

Don't let it dampen your fun. With so many indoor options, there's no reason to stay home. Just remember to stay safe and dry, and you'll have a great time exploring all the city offers, rain or shine.
